Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of efficacy expectation promoting program on chronic schizophrenics group and to suggest that this program was an effective independent nursing intervention to improve the self efficacy, self care activity, and quality of life of the chronic schizophrenics.
The total subjects of this study were 18 patients and 9 patients in self help group were assigned to the experimental group and another 9 patients in outpatient clinic to the control group.
The data were collected from July 5, 1996 to October 31, 1996 and analyzed by frequency, Fisher¢¥s exact test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, Spear-man¢¥s rank correlation analysis using a SAS program.
Department of Nursing, Chonnam Unviersity Medical School.
The results summarized as follows :
1. The homogeneity of general and disease related characteristics of subjects showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups. The homogeneity of the score of self efficacy, self care behavior, and quality of life of subjects in pretest showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups.
2. Hypothesis 1 such as "The experimental group given the efficacy expectation promoting program will have a high self efficacy score than the control group without the program" was divided two subhypothesis. ,
1) Subhypothesis 1 such as "The experimental group given the efficacy expectation promoting program will have a high general self efficacy score than the control group without the program" was not supported(p=0.057).
2) Subhypothesis 2 such as "The experimental group given the efficacy expectation promoting program will have a high social self efficacy score than the control group without the program" was supported(p<0.05).
3. Hypothesis 2 such as "The experimental group given the efficacy expectation promoting program will have a high self care activity score than the control group without the program" was supported (p< 0.001) .
The score of self care activity of experimental group in sleep(p<0.05), elimination(p<0.05), security(p<0.05), leisure activity (p< 0. 05), management of money(p<0.001), clinic visiting(p<0. 01) area was significantly higher than that of control group.
4. Hypothesis 3 such as "The experimental group given the efficacy expectation promoting program will have a high quality of life score than the control group without the program" was supported (p<0.05 ).
5. There was a significant relationship between self efficacy and self¢¥ care activity (r=0. 787, p<0.01) at posttest in experimental group.
